25+ Fun Things to do in Auckland in April 2022
As always, there is so much happening in Auckland, but I’ve worked hard to bring you the best things to do in Auckland in April 2022. I think I’ve covered all the big stuff, and some interesting local attractions.

Taking advantage of April in Auckland
It looks like our long, long summer may finally be turning, so this is a great time to get outdoors before winter sets in. Walks like Upper Nihopotu Dam in the Waitakeres and Oakley Creek in Waterview/Mt Albert have impressive waterfalls after rain, and the tracks won’t be too sodden yet.
Likewise, the Botanic Gardens and so many of Auckland’s parks are just on the edge of their Autumn colouring, so the parks are going to get pretty colourful, and hopefully you’ll stay dry while enjoying them. Sculpture in the Gardens finishes April 3rd.
Late season golf is also on form, with fairways greening up under the mix of rain and sun, but not yet getting boggy. Try Clarks Beach Golf Course, if you haven’t yet.
Sailing and boating are still on for you lucky folks with craft. America’s Cup Sailing will be awesome right now, and whale watching or dolphin watching cruises are actually really good under an overcast — but watch for those strong winds that can pick up as we head to the end of the month.
April can get pretty wet, so for things to do in Auckland with kids in the rain, I’d recommend the Auckland Museum which has opened The Imaginarium – a supersized new gallery for kids. April 15th should see the opening of the first full T-Rex skeleton in the southern hemisphere. Jurassic Park vibes!
For adults… I plan to get to Weta Workshop Unleashed in the Auckland CBD and the Dutch Markets in Onehunga. I’m going to take the early evenings as an excuse to check out a few new restaurants too. I’m eyeing up a last-minute Waiheke Island wine tour if the weather holds to the end of the month.
Public transport is half-price from April 3, so make use of it on your adventures and commutes. The savings will get you something delicious at these best cafes in Point Chev.
And don’t forget, clocks go back between when you go to bed on Saturday April 2 and wake up on Sunday April 3. Daylight savings ends!
Easter in Auckland
Is it just me, or is Easter just not that pumped this year? At least there’s still something for the families on at the Auckland showgrounds and Howick Historical Village, so the world hasn’t ended yet.
Deep Creek Brews & Beats at Browns Bay (4pm to 7pm) might be better for the adults. If you like it noisy, Waikaraka Park Speedway is doing fireworks and demolition darby as well as hosting the Auckland saloon car champs.
Best music events in Auckland in April 2022
We’re seeing cancelations for Troy Kingi with Delaney Davidson, Ladyhawke, Patti Smith through Ticketmaster. This Covid thing sucks for the big names!
Moxtix has some solid independent gigs linked up including Mousey and French for Rabbits album releases – both at the Tuning Fork. Moxtix’s ‘Women to the Front’ promo highlights great female artists. Those gigs don’t start till next month, but tickets are available now.
- April 12 @8pm, Foo Fighter’s drummer Taylor Hawkins is being remembered with a tribute night of rock at the Ding Dong Lounge.
Theatre and Arts events in Auckland in April 2022
It’s the last chance to get to Hono – the inaugural exhibition at new gallery, Season in Commercial Bay, CBD. Hono “comprises work by Neke Moa (Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Porou, Ngāti Tūwharetoa) and Jade Townsend (Ngāti Kahungunu, Te Ātihaunui-a-Pāpārangi)”. The photos look stunning! Open 11-5 Wed through Sat. Exhibition finishes on April 14th.
- There’s comedy on right through the month at The Classic, and I’m in that kind of a mood.
- April 7-9 @ 7:30pm, Daybreak Estate is a dance/theatre/performance comedy set in a decaying wellness retreat. Self help, or self destruction?
- The Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra has two events in April:
- April 7 @7:30pm, Dvorak Cello Concerto
- April 21, 7:30pm, Christian Li Plays
- April 21-24, Heathers, the Musical – based on the cult-classic 1989 high-school flick & well reviewed.

We have three Super Rugby games scheduled:
- April 2 @7pm – Blues vs Moana Pacifica @ Eden Park
- April 22 @8:30pm – Moana Pacifika vs Force @ Mt Smart Stadium
The Warriors remain in Australia until July. No live league for you!
Netball in Auckland in April
There’s three games in the ANZ Premiership to enjoy:

Basketball in Auckland in April
All the Breakers’ Auckland games are cancelled. They’re stuck in Australia until next season.
